You do not need to pay R20,000 to put AI on your CV
You need one certificate, listed properly, from a name an employer recognises. Here are five ways to get that for free — or for nothing more than your time.
One honest warning before the list, because most articles skip it and it matters: “free course” and “free certificate” are usually two different things. Several of the courses below let you study the material at no cost but charge for the certificate, or require you to apply for financial aid to get one. We have said which is which for each one. Check the provider’s current terms before you start, because they change.
1. Google AI Essentials — Coursera
Time: under 10 hours
What it covers: what AI actually is, how to write prompts, and how to use tools like Gemini for real work tasks.
Why it helps in South Africa: the Google name is recognised by every employer, and it signals you can use AI for admin, retail and marketing work rather than just having heard of it.
Cost: the material can be audited for free. The certificate sits behind a Coursera subscription — but Coursera offers financial aid, and applying costs you ten minutes.
On your CV: Google AI Essentials (2026) — prompt writing for customer service and admin workflows.
2. Microsoft AI-900: Azure AI Fundamentals — Microsoft Learn
Time: 6–10 hours
What it covers: AI concepts, responsible AI, and how businesses use machine learning and Azure AI services.
Why it helps: Microsoft is the default in South African corporate offices. For any admin, office or IT-support role, this is the most recognisable name you can put on a CV.
Cost: the learning path on Microsoft Learn is free. The optional certification exam is paid — you can complete the training without ever writing it.
On your CV: Microsoft AI-900 Fundamentals (Microsoft Learn, 2026) — AI concepts and responsible use in business.
3. HP LIFE — AI for business
Time: short, self-paced modules
What it covers: practical AI for small business — stock management, pricing, marketing.
Why it helps: it is genuinely practical and free, and it suits people running or working in a small business, spaza shop, salon or lodge rather than a corporate.
Cost: free, including the certificate.
On your CV: HP LIFE — AI for Business (2026) — applied AI to stock control and pricing.
4. Elements of AI — University of Helsinki and Reaktor
Time: around 30 hours, self-paced
What it covers: a deeper, still non-technical introduction to AI, including the maths-lite reasoning behind machine learning.
Why it helps: a university name on your CV stands out for graduate programmes and internships. It also takes real effort to finish, which is itself a signal.
Cost: free.
On your CV: Elements of AI, University of Helsinki (2026) — 30-hour foundation in machine learning concepts.
5. Canva Design School and Magic Studio
Time: 1–3 hours
What it covers: using AI features to design a CV, posters, menus and social posts.
Why it helps: it produces proof you can show. You can honestly say you designed ten social posts for a local shop — and put them in a portfolio link. Most courses give you a certificate; this one gives you work.
Cost: free.

How to list these on your CV
Put them in a Certificates or Professional Development section near the bottom, above references. Format:

Three rules:
- List two or three, not ten. A long list reads as course-collecting, not capability.
- Add one line of proof after each — what you actually did or built.
- Match the course to the job. Applying for an office role? Lead with Microsoft. Applying in retail or marketing? Lead with Google or Canva.
The mistake that wastes all of this
Doing five courses and writing “completed various AI courses” on your CV. That tells an employer nothing they can use, and it looks like padding.
Pick one, finish it, and write one specific line about what you can now do. Then — this is the part people skip — use the skill before the interview. Draft something real with it. Being able to describe a task you actually did beats any certificate.
