You love working with kids but you don’t have a teaching degree. You want paid work that is legal and near home. This guide shows what the work is and three routes in.
What does teaching work look like each day?
A qualified teacher plans lessons, teaches 30 to 45 learners, manages behaviour, marks books and talks to parents. It is long and noisy.
An assistant does not teach alone. You help reading groups, prep cards, watch break and support slow learners. In ECD you feed, read stories and clean. In aftercare you give snack, supervise homework and keep a register. You need patience more than a degree.
Can you work in a school without a teaching degree?
Yes, as support staff, not as a qualified teacher.
To be employed as an educator you need SACE registration. SACE is the South African Council for Educators, the body that registers teachers. Schools may not legally hire you as a teacher without SACE. SACE only registers you with a BEd or PGCE.
You can legally work as ECD assistant, classroom assistant, aftercare supervisor or tutor. These need SAPS (South African Police Service) police clearance, not SACE. Never claim you are a qualified teacher if you are not.
How do you start as ECD assistant, aftercare or tutor?
Route 1 is the easiest entry.
ECD means Early Childhood Development. Every town from Hogsback to Butterworth has creches. They need assistants for meals, stories and cleaning. Most ask for Grade 12 and clearance.
Aftercare in Cathcart, Komani and Makhanda runs until 17:30. Owners hire reliable local youth to help homework.
Classroom assistants help Grade R to Grade 3. SGB (School Governing Body) often pays you. Tutoring is per session in East London, Mthatha or online.
Most assistant jobs pay near National Minimum Wage, R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 for 40 hours.
Is TVET college assistant a route without a teaching degree?
Route 2 needs subject proof, not a teaching degree.
TVET means Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Colleges teach hospitality, IT, engineering and farming. They hire workshop and lab assistants. You need a trade test, N6, diploma or two years experience.
Private colleges in Gqeberha and East London do the same. You need SAPS clearance. DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) and QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) set rules. This is not a shortcut to school teaching.
Why does qualified teaching need a degree plus SACE?
Route 3 is for class teachers on the educator payroll.
You need a four-year BEd or degree plus PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), then apply to SACE. Without SACE you cannot be employed as an educator, even in private schools.
If someone offers a permanent state teacher post without degree and no SACE, it is not legal. Never pay SACE fees via WhatsApp.
What qualifications actually block you and what does not?
SACE blocks qualified teacher jobs. No SACE, no teacher post.
ECD Level 4 blocks qualified ECD practitioner jobs. Level 4 is via ETDP SETA, the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority, the SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) for education. You can enter with Grade 10 or 11 via learnership.
Matric often blocks SGB assistant posts but not always. Centres in Hogsback or Butterworth sometimes take Grade 11 plus Level 1 to 3 and a reference. For TVET assistant, your trade blocks you, not a teaching degree.
What do schools really screen for in assistants?
Safety and reliability, not degrees.
First, SAPS clearance and Child Protection Register check.
Second, patience and clear English. You must read aloud and write short notes. In Makhanda and Cathcart, English plus isiXhosa helps.
Third, reliability. Principals fire for late coming and phone use. Come at 07:00, call when sick, keep phone away.
Fourth, you need a contract under BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act) and UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund). UIF ceiling is R17,712 per month, max R177.12 per side. Tax-free threshold for 2026/27 (1 Mar 2026 – 28 Feb 2027) is R99,000 per year.
Where do you find these jobs near home?
Every town has learners, so every town has work.
Komani, Butterworth, Mthatha, Gqeberha, East London, Makhanda, Cathcart and Hogsback have schools, ECD centres and aftercare. Walk with five CVs and ask if they keep an SGB list.
Online, search teaching and education jobs on JobsJunction. Use SAYouth for Assistants and ECD learnerships. See our SAYouth ESSA Harambee guide — ESSA is Employment Services of South Africa.

What could your first year path look like near Hogsback?
Month one: Volunteer two mornings in Cathcart or Makhanda as reading helper. Get a volunteer letter. Apply on SAYouth for assistant and ECD posts. Start SAPS clearance.
Month two to three: Get a reference and apply for paid SGB or aftercare.
Month four to nine: Start ETDP SETA Level 4 learnership via TVET in Komani or East London. Most are 6 to 12 months with stipend. Never pay to join. EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) rate is R16.62 per hour from 1 March 2026, but SETA stipends vary.
Month ten to twelve: Finish Level 4 and apply as qualified practitioner.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need matric to be a classroom assistant?
Most schools list matric as preferred. Some Grade R posts in small towns take Grade 11 plus Level 1 to 3 and a reference. If you have no matric, start with ECD centres and finish Level 4. See jobs with no matric and no experience.
Will I be paid during an ECD learnership?
Most learnerships pay a stipend for transport and food, not a full wage. Amount varies, so see signed agreement. You need a BCEA-aligned agreement. If provider asks for upfront fee, it is a scam.
Can a private school hire me as a teacher without SACE?
No. Private and public schools may not employ you as qualified educator without SACE. They can hire you as assistant or aftercare manager without SACE. If they make you the only class teacher for months, they break the law. You have little protection at CCMA (Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration) under LRA (Labour Relations Act).
