You like fixing things, but every ad says degree or BTech. You don’t have one, so you think the door is closed. Most hands-on engineering jobs start with TVET and a trade test, not university.
What does engineering work look like day to day?
Three layers work on same site.
Artisan is hands-on. PPE, tools, job card. Electrician wires and tests. Fitter fits bearings and pumps. Welder and boilermaker join steel. Millwright keeps machines running.
Technician is in-between. You measure, inspect, test and log. In East London or Komani you check tolerances and write reports.
Professional engineer designs, calculates and signs off. Registered with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).
Which type of job fits you best?
Fixing and seeing a machine run right after fits artisan. Measuring and fault sheets fits technician. Maths and design fits professional.
Many in Butterworth and Makhanda start as general worker, then artisan, then technician. You do not have to pick forever.
How do you become an artisan without a degree?
Rank 1 – main route without degree.
Step 1: TVET N1-N3. DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) runs it. Need Grade 10 with maths. Some take Grade 9 with bridging. Check Lovedale TVET College in Zwelitsha, King Hintsa TVET College in Butterworth and Centane, Eastcape Midlands TVET College in Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet.
Step 2: Apprenticeship. Company signs you 3 to 4 years as electrician, fitter, welder, millwright or diesel mechanic. Work and fill logbook.
Step 3: Trade test. QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) sets standard. Test at accredited centre or INDLELA. Pass and you are qualified.
MERSETA (Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority)) often funds trades.
How do you become a technician with TVET?
Rank 2. NCV (National Certificate Vocational) Engineering, then N4-N6 plus 18 months workplace. Gives National Diploma as technician.
You test, plan maintenance and supervise. In Gqeberha automotive you check jigs within 0.1mm. In Cathcart you plan weekly maintenance.
Many stop at N3 – fine for artisan, but technician needs N6 and logbook. Needs maths.
Can a learnership get you into engineering?
Rank 3 – 12 months theory plus work with stipend.
Look for:
- MERSETA – maintenance, welding, toolmaking
- MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) – Rustenburg, Kathu, Emalahleni
- CETA (Construction Education and Training Authority) – civil and plant
Must be on ESSA, SAYouth or Harambee. See how to register on SAYouth, ESSA and Harambee. If anyone asks you to pay for learnership, walk away. Scam.
Learnerships often lead to apprenticeship or trade test prep.
When do you actually need a degree?
Rank 4 – only for professional posts. Need BEng or BSc Eng, then years as Candidate, then Pr Eng with ECSA.
Do not conflate. Ad says Pr Eng, ECSA, sign-off – degree. Ad says trade test, artisan, fitter, electrician – TVET plus trade test. Different gates.
What qualifications block you and what don’t?
Trade test certificate blocks artisan work legally. You cannot work alone as qualified electrician or millwright without it.
ECSA blocks professional sign-off.
General worker in workshop does not need degree or trade. Workshop assistant, tool store, cleaner – needs reliability, safety and Grade 10 or 11. Gets you inside near foremen who pick apprentices. See jobs that need no matric or experience.
Even entry needs UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) – ceiling R17,712 per month in 2026, max R177.12 per side.
What do employers screen for before hiring?
Five checks:
- Safety. PPE, lockout, toolbox talk.
- Tools and licences. Own basic tools, driver’s licence, forklift if you have.
- Maths and drawings. Read tape, fractions, simple drawing. N2 maths enough to start.
- Reliability and shift. Can you be there 06:00 in Hogsback or Cathcart, do overtime and standby?
- Record. SAPS (South African Police Service) check and medical fitness for factories and mines.
Pay starts at minimums. Assistants get National Minimum Wage R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 on 40-hour week. EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) is R16.62 per hour from 1 March 2026. Legal floors, not artisan rates. Tax-free is R99,000 per year for 2026/27 tax year (1 Mar 2026 to 28 Feb 2027), rebate R17,820 per SARS (South African Revenue Service), so most entry pay no income tax.
Where are the engineering jobs in South Africa?
Factories and mines hire most.
Gauteng hub – Isando, Germiston, Rosslyn. Most engineering jobs are there.
Eastern Cape automotive – Gqeberha, Kariega, East London. Fitters, electricians, millwrights in Deal Party and Berlin parks.
Western Cape food processing and marine – Cape Town, Atlantis. KZN – Durban, Pinetown, Richards Bay.
Mining – Rustenburg, Kathu, Emalahleni, Steelpoort – diesel mechanic, boilermaker, electrician.
Near Hogsback, Cathcart, Komani and Mthatha, look to East London IDZ and Gqeberha. BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act) and LRA (Labour Relations Act) set hours and notice. If you earn below R269,600.90 per year from 1 May 2026, about R22,466.74 per month under s198B, you get extra protection on fixed-term contracts.
What should you do in your first year?
This month go to Lovedale TVET or Eastcape Midlands TVET and ask for N1 Electrical or Fitting dates. Bring ID and report.
Same time apply for one general worker job in workshop in Cathcart, Komani or East London within 100km.
Next 6 months work, save, finish N2 and learn tool names. After 6 months ask foreman about MERSETA apprenticeship intake. Bring logbook and results. That is how most get in.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need matric to start artisan work?
Need N1, usually Grade 10 with maths. Some take Grade 9 with bridging. For electrician need maths and science at N level. Check Lovedale and Eastcape Midlands directly, not via agent.
How long from zero to qualified artisan?
4 to 5 years via TVET plus apprenticeship plus trade test. Year 1 N1-N3, years 2-4 apprentice, final months trade test. Work as general worker in Cathcart while studying. Slow but trusted.
Can I do engineering without strong maths?
Artisan needs practical maths – tape, fractions, area. TVET teaches it. Technician and professional need strong maths. If weak, start as assistant to learn while you catch up.
