A job scam is any advert, message or “recruiter” that takes money or personal information from you in exchange for work that does not exist. The pattern is remarkably consistent: the offer arrives fast, the pay is above market, the process is unusually easy, and at some point you are asked to pay.
Hold to one rule: a legitimate employer does not charge you to be hired. Registration fees, “training deposits”, payments for uniforms or equipment, “background check” costs, and requests to buy airtime or data to unlock an interview are all warning signs. So is any request for your ID number, bank details or a copy of your ID before a formal written offer, or an instruction to pay by e-wallet or cash send rather than into a company account.
Before you reply, verify: search the company name and registration number, check whether the email domain matches the company’s real website, and look for a physical address and a landline. Be sceptical of offers that exist only on WhatsApp or from a free email address, and of “interviews” conducted entirely by chat. If a “job” involves receiving money or parcels on someone else’s behalf, walk away — that is a money-mule or parcel-mule setup, and it can leave you criminally liable.
If you have been targeted, report it to the SAPS (10111 or your nearest station), the Department of Employment and Labour, and the platform hosting the advert. Never send money to recover money you have already lost — recovery-fee scams target victims a second time.
