Start with what employers are actually advertising
You will read a lot of listicles about the “skills of the future”. Most are guesses, and some are written to sell you a course. Here is something more useful: what South African employers are actually hiring for right now.
We counted 890 live vacancies on JobsJunction in a recent 30-day window and sorted them by category. That is not a forecast. It is what was on the market.

Read that table carefully, because it contradicts the usual advice. IT & Tech is seventh. If you are choosing what to learn based on headlines about AI, you are aiming at a category with fewer live vacancies than finance, marketing, sales or admin. Tech pays well and it is growing — but “everyone should learn to code” is not what the hiring data says.
The other thing the table shows: the biggest categories are the unglamorous ones. Finance, marketing, sales and admin together account for 403 of 890 vacancies — more than 45% of the market.
What that means for the skills worth learning
1. Bookkeeping and Pastel or Xero
Finance is the single largest category. SMEs do not need a CA; they need someone who can run Pastel or Xero, reconcile a bank statement and handle SARS eFiling. That last one appears in advert after advert and almost nobody lists it.
2. Digital marketing plus AI tools
Marketing & Media is second at 102 vacancies. This is not a degree subject — it is Canva, Meta Ads, Google Ads, CapCut and using AI to draft copy. Every small business, lodge and retailer needs this and cannot afford an agency.
3. Sales and account management
97 vacancies. Sales is the most reliably hiring category in South Africa and the one with the lowest barrier to entry, because it is judged on results rather than on paper qualifications.
4. Advanced Excel, reporting and Power BI
Not “data science”. Admin and finance employers want someone who can clean a messy spreadsheet, build a pivot table and produce a dashboard. This single skill upgrades you across four of the top five categories.
5. Software development — Python and Java
70 vacancies, and the highest advertised salaries in our data. Worth learning, but go in knowing it is a longer road than bookkeeping and a smaller category than the headlines suggest.
6. Nursing, caregiving and pharmacist assistant
Healthcare is 72 vacancies and does not disappear when the economy slows. Enrolled nurse and caregiver routes are shorter than most people assume.
7. Electrical, plumbing and solar installation
Construction & Trades is 40 vacancies, and the solar side is genuinely short of people. A short accredited solar installation course leads to work faster than most three-year qualifications.
8. Code 10–14 driving with a PDP
Logistics is 51 vacancies and it never stops. A Code 10 licence with a Professional Driving Permit is one of the shortest routes from unemployed to employed in the country.
9. Call centre and fluent English plus a second language
Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town keep hiring. Afrikaans, isiZulu or Portuguese on top of fluent English moves you to the front of the queue.
10. Cybersecurity basics
A smaller category, but POPIA means every business with a customer database now needs someone who understands passwords, phishing and backups. It is a cheap skill to add and a useful differentiator.
What the advertised salaries look like
Only about a quarter of listings advertise a salary at all, and employers state them inconsistently — some monthly, some annual — so treat the figures below as a ranking, not a pay slip.
On that basis, the categories with the highest advertised median pay were Finance & Accounting, Logistics & Warehouse, Engineering, Healthcare and IT & Tech. The lowest were hospitality, admin and marketing.
The takeaway: finance and engineering are both large and well paid. Hospitality and admin are easy to enter but pay least — a reason to treat them as a first job rather than a destination.
How to put a new skill on your CV today
Do not write “interested in data analysis”. That is a wish, and recruiters discount wishes. Write evidence:
“Completed Google Data Analytics certificate (2026) — cleaned a 500-row sales dataset in Excel and built a reporting dashboard in Looker Studio.”
The shape is always the same: what you did, what you produced, and a number. One line like that beats a paragraph of adjectives. And if the skill is still being learned, say so honestly — “in progress” is credible, “expert” is not.
