You need paid work this month. You are fit, you can stand and lift, and you do not have matric. Warehouse work can get you in fast if you know how it works.
What does a warehouse job actually involve?
You stand most of the shift. You pick items from racks with a list or scanner, pack them into boxes, scan barcodes, and load pallets. You help with bin checks and stock counts.
Shifts start early, often 06:00. You lift up to 20kg, push trolleys, and work to targets like 50 picks per hour. You wear safety shoes and hi-vis. If you worked busy days in Mthatha or Butterworth, you know the pace.
What is the quickest way in with no matric?
Picker and packer is fastest. Grade 10 or 11 is enough for most DCs (distribution centres). No degree needed.
You must read a slip and count right. This matches many jobs with no matric and no experience. It is close to Shoprite and Pick n Pay retail jobs where speed beats matric.
What are the five entry routes ranked?
Eight logistics paths exist, but these five pay quickest, easiest to hardest.
1) General worker / picker / packer – clearest entry of eight. No licence. Apply direct or via agency in East London or Komani. Most start here.
2) Casual-to-permanent via agency (TES). TES (Temporary Employment Service) is a labour broker like Workforce or Adcorp BLU. Daily bookings in Gqeberha and East London. Be reliable, get repeat work. Under LRA (Labour Relations Act) s198A, if you earn below threshold and work over 3 months, you can be deemed permanent at client.
3) Forklift operator – needs licence. No licence, no forklift. Need forklift licence from TETA (Transport Education and Training Authority) accredited school. Firms often promote good pickers after 6 months.
4) Driver Code 10 / EC – needs licence + PrDP. Code 10 is for trucks over 16,000kg, EC for truck with heavy trailer. You also need PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for goods.
5) Learnership via SETA. SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) learnership is 12 months paid. TETA (Transport Education and Training Authority) covers logistics. W&RSETA (Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority) covers retail warehousing.
What qualifications block you and what does not?
What blocks you: forklift licence for forklift, Code 10 or EC plus PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for driving, Grade 10 for picker.
What does not: degree, diploma, SACE (South African Council for Educators) or SANC (South African Nursing Council). For picker and packer they are irrelevant. If you finished Grade 10 in Cathcart, Hogsback or Makhanda, add it to CV (Curriculum Vitae).
What do employers really check?
Reliability, punctuality, physical fitness and shift work. They check ID, address, bank account, and SAPS (South African Police Service) criminal clearance.
They do not check degree for picker.
Unfair but common: “own transport required” for a warehouse in Isando or Montague Gardens where taxis do not run at 04:30. Entry pay is often National Minimum Wage at R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 on 40-hour week. At that pay, owning a car is unrealistic.
Where are the warehouse jobs in South Africa?
Most warehouse and logistics jobs cluster near ports and retail DCs.
Gauteng: Isando, Jet Park, City Deep, Roodekop – biggest hub.
Western Cape: Montague Gardens, Epping, Bellville South.
KZN: Cornubia, Cato Ridge, Prospecton near Durban.
Eastern Cape: Gqeberha IDZ (Industrial Development Zone) and Coega, East London IDZ (Industrial Development Zone) in Wilsonia and Berlin, plus smaller DCs for Komani, Mthatha, Butterworth. If you live in Hogsback or Cathcart, you travel to East London or Gqeberha.
How do shifts, overtime and pay work?
Rostered shifts, often 6 days. BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act) limits normal time to 45 hours per week. Overtime is 1.5 times and must be agreed.
Entry pay is often minimum. National Minimum Wage is R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 per month on 40-hour week. UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is 1% you and 1% employer, capped at R17,712 per month, max R177.12 each side. Tax-free threshold is R99,000 per year for 2026/27, 1 Mar 2026 to 28 Feb 2027, rebate R17,820, per SARS (South African Revenue Service).
Below R269,600.90 per year from 1 May 2026, about R22,466.74 per month, you have more protection under s198B of LRA (Labour Relations Act) as TES (Temporary Employment Service) worker.
What is a realistic plan for your first year?
Month 1: Register at 5 agencies in East London and Gqeberha. Take ID, CV, address, bank letter. Ask for general worker, picker, packer.
Months 2 to 6: Get bookings. Keep 100% attendance. Learn scanning and bin locations. Save R3,000 to R5,000 for TETA (Transport Education and Training Authority) forklift course.
Months 7 to 12: Get forklift licence, add to CV, ask to be submitted as forklift operator. Picking and packing is your route to permanent – prove fast and safe, then move up.
How do you get licences without being scammed?
Forklift: only use TETA (Transport Education and Training Authority) accredited provider. Ask for accreditation letter. Real course is 3 to 5 days with practical. Certificate must show ID and 2-year expiry.
Code 10 / EC and PrDP (Professional Driving Permit): go via DLTC (Driving Licence Testing Centre). Need learner’s, driving test, then PrDP with medical and clearance. PrDP renews every 2 years. Check DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) list.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need matric for a warehouse job?
No for picker, packer, general worker. Most say Grade 10 or 11 accepted. You must read slips and count. Forklift and Code 10 need licence, not matric.
How much do entry warehouse jobs pay in 2026?
At or just above minimum – R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 per month on 40-hour week. Night or cold store may add allowance. R15,000 for packing from home is scam.
Should I use an agency or apply direct?
Do both. Direct to East London IDZ (Industrial Development Zone) or Gqeberha IDZ can be slow. Agencies fill daily casual shifts. Keep timesheets. Over 3 months via TES (Temporary Employment Service) earning under R269,600.90 per year, LRA (Labour Relations Act) s198A may make you employee of client.
