You can fix computers for family but every advert says BSc Computer Science required. You think IT is only coding and there is no way in without a degree.
What does IT work actually look like day to day?
Most entry IT is not coding. It is helping people when tech breaks.
On helpdesk you work a ticketing system. You reset passwords in Active Directory, unlock accounts, show someone in Cathcart how to join Teams, and log the fix. You restart the print spooler a lot.
As a technician you replace RAM, clean dust from a lab PC in Komani, reinstall Windows 11 and test Wi-Fi. As a QA tester you follow a test sheet and write bug notes. Fixing printers matters more than writing code.
Which entry routes hire the most without a degree?
These five hire far more entry people than junior software development:
1) Support and helpdesk. First-line support and service desk. Every company with 20+ staff needs this. You handle 20 to 40 tickets a day. 2) QA tester. You test software, not build it. Detail and clear English matter.
3) IT technician and field tech. Set up laptops, routers and tills. Small firms in Mthatha and Butterworth live on this.
4) Call centre tech support. Telcos need people who can talk a customer in Hogsback through fibre setup.
5) Learnership via MICT SETA (Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority). A 12-month programme under QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) with a stipend.
Will you get blocked without a degree?
Degree required appears often, but for entry support it is not always a hard gate.
Many employers in East London and Gqeberha accept CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ (N+), MICT SETA certificates, or a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) certificate from Lovedale or King Hintsa TVET.
Proof of fixing matters more. Fix three laptops in your community, take before and after photos with permission, and write a log: problem, steps, test.
If an advert needs registration like SACE (South African Council for Educators) or SANC (South African Nursing Council), that is different. IT support rarely needs that.
What do employers actually screen for in interviews?
They test how you solve problems, not your degree name.
They ask how you would handle email that will not sync. They want you to ask questions, check basics first, stay calm and explain in plain English. They also check if you can write a short ticket note and follow a shift roster under BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act).
One unfair thing: some helpdesk jobs ask for own car and licence even when pay is low. That excludes people from Makhanda who use taxis. If you do not have a car, apply anyway and state your transport plan.
Where are IT support jobs found, and can you work from Hogsback?
Most posts are in Gauteng, especially Midrand and Centurion, plus Western Cape and KZN.
Remote first-line support is growing. If you have stable power and LTE or fibre in Hogsback, you can do remote helpdesk for a company in East London or Gqeberha. Start with IT and tech jobs and filter for helpdesk, technician and learnership. Also check municipal offices, TVET colleges, schools with labs, and small ISPs in East London.
What can you realistically do in the next 12 months?
This month: finish one free course. Do Google IT Support Certificate, you can audit free, and use Microsoft Learn for basics. See free AI and IT courses for your CV.
Next month: fix three laptops for free in Hogsback, Cathcart and Butterworth. Record problem, fix and test.
Month 3 to 6: build a one-page CV. Use keywords: troubleshoot, install, configure, Active Directory, Windows 11, ticketing. Learn how in SA CV that beats ATS.
Month 6 to 12: apply for five helpdesk jobs a week in East London, Gqeberha and remote, plus MICT SETA learnerships on SAYouth.mobi. Stipends often sit near National Minimum Wage, which is R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 per month on a 40-hour week. You get UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) credits.
Which free or low-cost training actually helps you get hired?
You do not need R20,000 to start. These are real in 2026:
Google IT Support Certificate: troubleshooting and networking basics. Finish in 3 to 6 weeks.
Microsoft Learn: free modules for Windows and Microsoft 365.
freeCodeCamp: free and good for logic and QA mindset.
MICT SETA learnerships: NQF 4 or 5 in IT support. Run by QCTO-accredited providers. Find them on MICT SETA site and SAYouth.mobi.
SAYouth.mobi: zero-rated, no data needed. Many SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) and YES opportunities are listed there.
Check in-demand skills for 2026 and focus on helpdesk, cloud support and basic security.
How do you keep records and avoid scams?
Keep slips. On a learnership you get a payslip showing UIF. UIF ceiling is R17,712 per month, max R177.12 per side. Keep slips for SARS (South African Revenue Service). Tax-free threshold for 2026/27 tax year (1 Mar 2026 – 28 Feb 2027) is R99,000 per year, rebate R17,820.
Real employers do not ask you to pay for a laptop via eWallet. Check for a physical address on Maps, a company domain email, and a contract mentioning BCEA and UIF. If they promise R40,000 for entry helpdesk with no interview, it is a scam. Never send ID, bank card and SAPS (South African Police Service) clearance to a Gmail address.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to get an IT job without a degree?
No. Most entry jobs are helpdesk, technician and QA testing. You need to troubleshoot, follow steps and explain clearly. Coding helps later but is not needed to start.
What is the fastest certificate that employers accept for helpdesk?
CompTIA A+ and Google IT Support Certificate are most accepted for first-line support. A TVET NQF 4 in IT also works. Pair one certificate with proof you fixed three devices.
Can I get remote IT support work if I live in a small town like Hogsback?
Yes if you have stable internet and power backup. Many helpdesks use Teams and a ticketing system from anywhere. You may still travel to East London or Makhanda for an interview, and some jobs want on-site in Midrand or Centurion at first.
