You are good with maths but you do not have a degree. Every finance advert asks for CA(SA) or BCom and you wonder if any job will take you.
What does finance work actually involve day to day?
It is not just CA work. Most finance jobs are routine checks that keep a business paid and legal.
You capture supplier invoices. You reconcile the bank – match statement to Pastel or Sage. You run payroll: check hours, leave and overtime under BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act), deduct UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) and tax for SARS (South African Revenue Service). You do credit control: call customers in Butterworth or Cathcart who are late.
Which finance jobs can you get without a degree?
You can get these without a degree:
- Bookkeeping or admin clerk in a shop in Hogsback, Makhanda or Komani.
- Accounts payable clerk – check delivery notes vs invoices.
- Receivable or credit control clerk – send statements and chase overdue.
- Payroll clerk – process timesheets and UIF.
- Bank teller or call centre agent – handle cash and KYC (Know Your Customer) checks.
A hardware in Cathcart, lodge near Hogsback, spares shop in Butterworth all need debtors and filing.
What are the 5 entry routes ranked from easiest?
1) Bookkeeping / admin via TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training). Do N4-N6 or short certificate at TVET in East London, Gqeberha or Komani. Help a local business in Pastel. Fastest paid start.
2) Credit control, payroll, payable clerk. Ads say degree preferred but managers in East London take diploma plus Excel and Pastel. Cash-ups in Komani count.
3) Bank teller or call centre via in-house training. Banks train you. Need matric and must pass credit and SAPS (South African Police Service) checks.
4) Learnership via FASSET (Finance and Accounting Services SETA) or BANKSETA. A SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) learnership is 12 months work plus study with stipend. FASSET is Finance and Accounting Services SETA. BANKSETA is Banking SETA. Stipend at least National Minimum Wage – R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 per month on 40-hour week. Apply via SAYouth, ESSA and bank sites.
5) Article clerk / CA(SA) route – separate. Not for you now if you have no degree. CA(SA) is Chartered Accountant South Africa. Needs BCom, CTA (Certificate in the Theory of Accounting), 3 years articles, SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) exams.
What qualifications open doors and what do not?
Helps without degree: ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) Bookkeeping Certificate or FET Certificate, or FASSET-accredited course. Proves you can do ledgers and VAT.
Often listed but not strict: many payroll ads say BCom. In Gqeberha, diploma plus Excel and reference gets interview. Wording is unfair but common.
Gates you: CA(SA) needs degree and articles. No shortcut. Offer of CA without university for fee is scam.
What employers actually screen for in a finance role
Trust and accuracy, not university name.
- Accuracy: does work balance? Wrong UIF – UIF ceiling R17,712 per month in 2026, max R177.12 per side – can cause SARS penalty.
- Excel: filters, SUMIF, VLOOKUP, pivot? Every shortlist has test. See in-demand skills for level.
- Cash and privacy: balance till, keep IDs private.
- Trust: most run SAPS criminal checks and credit checks under NCR (National Credit Regulator) rules and call references. Clean record matters more.
- Deadlines: payroll closes same day, credit control before month-end.
Where are the jobs and where should you look?
Most big listings are Gauteng – Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand – then Western Cape and KZN. That is head offices.
But bookkeeping is in every town. Co-op in Cathcart, lodge near Hogsback, supplier in Komani, school in Butterworth all need part-time help.
Search three ways: shop windows and Facebook groups, recruiters in Mthatha, East London, Gqeberha, and boards like finance and accounting jobs. For teller, apply direct on bank site, not WhatsApp.
How can you start in the next 12 months without moving?
Use this in Eastern Cape now.
This month: learn Excel – SUMIF, VLOOKUP, filters. Install Sage Pastel free trial. Capture 20 invoices, 20 receipts, do one bank recon.
Month 2-3: apply for accounts clerk or credit control in East London or Komani. Apply for retail admin with cash-ups. Register on SAYouth for FASSET and BANKSETA.
Month 4-9: track wins – “Reconciled 4 accounts weekly, cut overdue 15% in 4 months, payroll for 35 staff with zero BCEA errors.”
Month 10-12: add ICB if you can. With 12 months Pastel, Excel, references, you can apply for payroll jobs that said degree required.
Why is the CA(SA) route a different track?
Two ladders. Do not mix.
Accessible ladder: TVET, ICB, bookkeeping, payables, credit control, payroll, teller. No degree needed. Entry in months. Pay near minimum. BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act), LRA (Labour Relations Act) and UIF apply.
CA ladder: degree, CTA, 3 years articles, SAICA exams. Needs full-time study and firm selection. Aim later after income.
If someone offers articles without degree for fee, it is scam.
How do you write your CV for an accounts clerk job?
Prove accuracy, not claim it.
Use clean ATS (Applicant Tracking System) friendly format. This shows how to list Pastel and Excel: CV that beats ATS.
List tools: Sage Pastel, Excel – VLOOKUP, Pivot. Tasks: invoices per day, recons per week. Compliance: BCEA overtime, UIF, SARS EMP201.
Write “Balanced till daily within R5, no shortages 6 months, manager in Komani can confirm.”
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a finance job with only matric and maths literacy?
Yes for bookkeeping, payables and credit control in small business. Need Excel, Pastel and reference saying accurate. Teller takes matric with maths or maths literacy plus NQF 4. CA needs degree maths.
Do I need perfect credit to get a finance job?
For bank teller cash roles, banks run credit checks under NCR (National Credit Regulator) rules and SAPS checks. For non-cash bookkeeping in East London or Mthatha, they check references.
What is the difference between FASSET and BANKSETA learnerships?
Both are SETA programmes. FASSET (Finance and Accounting Services SETA) covers bookkeeping and payroll. BANKSETA (Banking SETA) covers teller and banking ops. Both 12 months work plus study with stipend. Apply via SAYouth, ESSA or bank sites.
