Free Department of Labour Career Guidance Guide

You sent 50 applications and heard nothing. Or your child finished in Butterworth and has no idea what to do next. You need someone to sit with you and map a real plan.

Is this free service for you?

Yes. Department of Labour career guidance is free. You don’t pay at the door.

It is for unemployed, underemployed, school-leavers, and people without matric. It is not only for matric. Grade 10, Grade 11, or no certificate – you can still get help.

It is for you if you have matric but results aren’t opening doors. Or if you work part-time in Cathcart or Hogsback and want something more stable. You don’t need work experience.

Official name is Department of Employment and Labour. Most still say Department of Labour. Ask for Employment Services at reception.

What will you actually get from counselling?

You get one-on-one time with a counsellor. Not a group talk.

They help you set realistic expectations. They look at your interests and strengths – subjects you liked, what you are good at with your hands, with people, with numbers.

They match that to jobs that exist. If you liked Life Sciences and help at a clinic near Hogsback, they might suggest community health work, enrolled nursing via TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), or care work learnerships.

Some centres offer a basic aptitude assessment – short tasks to show strengths. Where offered it is free. Private psychologists also offer tests but charge a fee. Don’t pay if the labour centre offers it free.

You also get info on learnerships, TVET colleges, SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) routes, bursaries, and help to register on ESSA (Employment Services of South Africa).

This is guidance, not job placement.

What it won’t do for you

It won’t guarantee a job. No centre can.

It won’t pay for studies, transport or rent. It can point to NSFAS and bursaries, but does not fund you.

It won’t create a learnership for you. Learnerships come from companies and SETAs. See learnership vs internship vs YES for how they work.

How to walk into a labour centre in 2026

Walk-in is still most reliable in 2026. There are more than 100 labour centres nationwide.

In Eastern Cape use East London, Komani, Mthatha, Gqeberha, Makhanda, Butterworth and others. From Cathcart, Komani is often closer than East London. From Hogsback it is about 2 hours to Komani by taxi.

Go Monday to Thursday, before 09:00. Fridays are short-staffed.

Take your ID. If you don’t have it, take birth certificate and proof you applied.

At reception say: “I need Employment Services for career guidance and ESSA registration.” You fill a form and wait.

Process changes by centre in 2026. Some ask you to phone first. Call before you travel and check www.labour.gov.za for numbers.

Can you get help online or by phone?

Yes. Use only official routes. Don’t pay an agent.

ESSA website: essa.labour.gov.za – Employment Services of South Africa. Create a profile and upload CV free.

Contact centre: 0860 101 018 – listed on www.labour.gov.za as departmental contact centre. Verify on site as numbers change.

Website: www.labour.gov.za redirects to Department of Employment and Labour.

SAYouth.mobi is zero-rated, run with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator. Register there and get linked to ESSA. Guide here: register on SAYouth, ESSA and Harambee.

What to bring so you don’t waste the trip

Bring what you have.

  • SA ID or passport with permit.
  • Highest qualification: matric cert, school report, TVET results.
  • CV if you have one. If not, they help you start. See jobs with no matric for format.
  • Proof of address if you have it – councillor letter is fine.
  • List: 3 jobs you like, subjects you liked, informal work – selling vetkoek, child-minding, fixing phones, farm work around Hogsback, volunteering in Makhanda.

Be honest. If you want office work but have no computer skills, they will point you to a free short course first.

What to do if the nearest centre is far from you

If you are in Hogsback and Komani is 2 hours away, phone first.

Ask if they do telephonic career counselling for first screening. Many do, then book face-to-face only if needed.

Use SAYouth.mobi and Harambee for free guidance.

Also try:

  • NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) for youth up to 35.
  • Local library in East London, Mthatha, Gqeberha. Department runs outreach days there.
  • Free tools like Khetha (khetha.org.za).

If someone on WhatsApp says they will book free counselling for R150, it is a scam.

What happens after your session

You leave with a one-page plan: what you are good at, 2-3 job families that fit, and 2-3 next steps.

Next steps may be: finish ESSA registration, apply to TVET college in Butterworth, apply for a SETA learnership, or do a computer course at library.

Keep that page to focus applications.

How to avoid scams around free counselling

A real counsellor never asks you to pay into personal account, e-wallet, or buy airtime.

They never ask for bank PIN or UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) login.

They don’t promise a job if you pay for uniform first.

If unsure, walk into centre yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need matric for Department of Labour career guidance?

No. It is for unemployed, underemployed and school-leavers with or without matric. Bring what reports you have and explain practical skills.

How long does career counselling take and do you need to book?

First session is 30 to 60 minutes. Some centres need booking, others take walk-ins. Call first and go Monday to Thursday morning with ID.

Will they give you a job on the same day?

No. It is guidance, not placement. They help you understand fit, improve CV, register on ESSA (Employment Services of South Africa), and show where to apply.

Next step

Call your nearest labour centre tomorrow – Komani if near Hogsback or Cathcart, or East London, Mthatha, Gqeberha, Makhanda or Butterworth if closer – and book a career guidance slot and ask what to bring for ESSA.
