SA Mining Sector Plans to Add Up to 100,000 Jobs by 2035

The Minerals Council South Africa (MCSA) aims to create between 50,000 and 100,000 additional jobs by 2035 through its Investment and Growth Strategy. According to MCSA president Paul Dunne, the industry also aims to contribute R65 billion to South Africa’s gross domestic product.

Preparing your career for growth in the resources sector

1. Prioritise certified artisan trades and technical qualifications. Long-term capital projects require heavy machinery operators, diesel mechanics, electricians, boilermakers, and fitters. If you want sustainable employment in heavy industry, seek formal training through accredited TVET colleges or SETA-registered apprenticeships. Holding an official trade test certificate sets you apart from uncertified applicants during major recruitment drives. Look for bursaries or artisan learner programmes offered by major industrial employers and sector education authorities. Keep your medical fitness certificates, safety passports, and relevant operating licenses up to date so you are ready to mobilize as soon as site work commences.

2. Build digital and operational technology skills alongside core mining proficiencies. Modern industrial operations rely increasingly on automated equipment, remote monitoring systems, and digital safety compliance tools. Workers who understand computerised maintenance tracking, basic data entry, and automated dispatch operations hold a clear competitive edge over traditional manual labour. You do not need an advanced engineering degree to benefit from this shift. Short courses in occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation, basic computer literacy, computer-aided drawing, or fleet tracking software can boost your CV significantly. Demonstrating that you adapt quickly to new electronic workflows makes you an attractive prospect for modern mine sites.

3. Monitor local employment forums and community supplier registers. Large industrial employers must follow strict Social and Labour Plans (SLPs) that prioritize hiring from nearby host communities. When expansion projects launch, recruitment teams work closely with municipal development offices, tribal authorities, and local Department of Employment and Labour centres. Register your profile on the Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) database. Attend municipal job outreach days in key mining corridors. Maintaining accurate, verifiable residential address documentation proves you belong to qualifying host communities, granting you priority access during grassroots intake rounds.
