You need money to study and a job after. You don’t want a certificate from Komani or Butterworth that never turns into pay.
Why do some bursaries lead to jobs and others don’t?
Some pay fees and stop. Others are tied to real work.
- Service contract. You work for the funder for same years funded. Department of Health does this for nursing. Leave early and you repay.
- Pipeline. Funder is also employer. Eskom, Transnet, DWS (Department of Water and Sanitation) need engineers and artisans. You do vacation work with them, so you are first when posts open. Not guaranteed but close.
- Scarce skills. Government funds teachers, nurses, TVET trades because posts stand empty. NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) funds TVET diplomas for that reason – employers in East London and Gqeberha hire those.
Bursaries saying “any field” rarely lead straight to work.
How does NSFAS help you get work without guaranteeing a job?
NSFAS does not promise a job. It pays for a qualification employers trust.
Covers: Universities – tuition, registration, accommodation or transport, books. TVET colleges – tuition, accommodation or transport, personal care.
Who qualifies: South African citizen, first qualification at public university or TVET college, household income R350,000 or less per year. SASSA recipients meet financial test automatically. You must pass modules to keep it.
How to apply: On my.nsfas.org.za. Create myNSFAS profile, upload documents. No fee. The 2026 window was typically September to January, but confirm exact dates on official NSFAS site.
Job link: No placement, but better employability. Use CV that beats ATS to turn certificate into interviews.
Is Funza Lushaka worth it if you must teach after?
Only if you want to teach in public schools.
Funding: BEd and PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) at public universities. Tuition, accommodation, meals, books and small allowance.
Deal: One year teaching in public school for each year funded. Four years funded equals four years teaching. Department of Basic Education gives priority for posts, but you still apply to provinces. You may be placed outside Mthatha or Cathcart.
How to apply: On funzalushaka.doe.gov.za after university teaching acceptance. Must be 30 or younger, good marks, re-apply yearly.
Don’t take it if you won’t teach – it becomes a loan with interest if you break service.
What does the Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship from NYDA cover?
Run by NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) for youth with good results who cannot afford fees.
Who: South Africans 14-35, accepted for undergrad degree at public university or university of technology, academic merit plus financial need.
What: Tuition, accommodation, meals, books. Plus mentorship and work readiness through NYDA. No automatic NYDA job.
How to apply: Online on NYDA Solomon Mahlangu portal at nyda.gov.za when open. Upload ID, matric, acceptance proof, income proof or affidavit, motivation letter. No fee.
Good for learners from Hogsback or Makhanda with strong matric and no support. Keep passing to renew.
Which other bursaries have a real link to jobs?
Government bursaries often have service contracts to fix staff shortages.
Department of Health: Nursing, medicine, pharmacy at public colleges and universities. You do clinical hours in public hospitals, then work in clinics and hospitals.
DWS: Civil engineering, water care, environmental science. Vacation training in municipal water projects.
Transnet and Eskom: Electrical, mechanical, civil engineering, artisans, logistics, accounting. Work-integrated learning on site. Good performers get first call for jobs.
Agriculture: Department of Agriculture funds agriculture diplomas linked to extension officer posts.
SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) bursaries: Some fund scarce trades with workplace learning.
Pattern is same – funder needs skill, so study ties to workplace.
How can you spot a bursary that really leads to a job?
Ask four questions:
- Who funds? Department or big employer means stronger job link.
- Contract words? Real bursaries say service contract, placement, internship, work-integrated learning, vacation work. Generic only says covers tuition.
- Course list? BEd maths and science, engineering, nursing, TVET trades are demand-driven. Any field is general.
- After-study plan? Good ones say you will work in public schools for X years or work for department. No info means you hunt alone.
Also check public institutions only. Ads funding any private college need checking on official .gov.za site.
What documents and steps do you need to apply correctly?
One pack works for most.
Documents: Certified ID, matric certificate or Grade 11 finals if still in Grade 12, proof of acceptance at public university or TVET college, proof of income – payslips, SASSA letter or affidavit if unemployed, residence proof.
Steps:
- Use official site only. NSFAS my.nsfas.org.za, Funza funzalushaka.doe.gov.za, NYDA nyda.gov.za, health and DWS .gov.za, Transnet and Eskom careers portals.
- One email you check daily.
- Do form yourself. Don’t pay anyone.
- Upload clear scans.
- Save proof. Reference number, screenshot, email – keep for years.
Deadlines: Don’t trust Facebook closes today. Check official site for 2026 dates, set reminder a week before. If still deciding, read what to do after matric results.
No fee to apply – ever.
How do you avoid bursary scams that charge a fee?
Real bursaries never charge. Pay R250 to secure NSFAS or R500 admin for Solomon Mahlangu is a scam.
Red flags: WhatsApp you won a bursary you never applied for, site that looks like NSFAS but ends .com not .org.za, agent promising placement in Butterworth school if you pay, asking for bank PIN.
Protect: Type official address yourself. Apply only on portals. Never send ID to personal Gmail. Use scam checks – same checks work.
If you paid, keep receipts, stop contact, report to SAPS and department fraud line.
What must you do once you get the bursary to keep it and get placed?
Keep marks. NSFAS, Funza and Solomon Mahlangu need you to pass and progress.
Honour service. If signed for teaching or nursing, work where needed, even if not near East London. For Funza load CV on provincial education database and accept public school post. Health allocates you to facility.
Keep proof. Award letter, contract, registration proof yearly, transcripts, placement letters, emails. Save cloud and USB – needed to prove service and avoid repayment.
Tell institution early you are bursary funded so account not blocked. Build basic work skills – Excel, email, timekeeping.
