Jobs Without Matric: TVET Colleges & Real Work Options

You left Grade 10 or 11 and think no matric means no job. It is harder without matric, but not the end. Many employers hire for skill and reliability, not just a certificate.

No matric does not mean no future, but you do need a skill

Every advert says Grade 12 and it feels blocked. You are not. Many jobs do not need matric by law. They need safe work, punctuality and customer care. No matric does not mean no future, it means you need one usable skill first. A short certificate or TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) changes your chance.

What jobs can you actually get without matric?

You can work without matric if you meet other rules:

  • General worker, cleaner, domestic, kitchen staff. Hard work and punctuality matter.
  • Retail assistant, cashier. Shops in Cathcart, Komani, Butterworth and Gqeberha hire Grade 10 or 11 who can count and help customers.
  • Caregiver, ECD assistant. Needs certificate and police clearance.
  • Security guard. Needs PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) registration, 18+.
  • Driver, delivery assistant. Needs licence and PrDP (Professional Driving Permit).
  • Call centre agent. Some centres in East London take Grade 11 with good English and computers.

Most entry jobs pay near National Minimum Wage, R30.23 per hour from 1 March 2026, about R5,240 per month on 40-hour week. Check payslip for UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund).

What is a TVET college and how does the NCV work?

A TVET college is public college under DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training). It teaches practical work skills.

Main option without matric is NCV (National Certificate Vocational). NCV has Level 2, 3 and 4. One level per year, three years total. Level 2 accepts Grade 9, 10 or 11, then Level 3 and Level 4. Level 4 is NQF Level 4, same level as matric for many jobs, though not NSC matric.

Other route is NATED, also called Report 191. N1 to N3 can accept Grade 10 or 11 for trades like electrical. N4 to N6 needs N3 or matric. Start with NCV or N1 if you have no matric.

Which NCV courses can you do with Grade 9, 10 or 11?

Lovedale TVET in Alice, King Hintsa TVET in Butterworth and Eastcape Midlands TVET in Gqeberha offer NCV to Grade 9-11 learners:

  • Hospitality. Food prep, housekeeping, reception. Linked to CATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority). Good for Hogsback guest houses or hotels in Mthatha.
  • Tourism. Tour ops and client service.
  • Office Administration. Typing, filing, reception, MS Office.
  • Information Technology. Computer support basics.
  • Electrical Infrastructure Construction. Wiring and safety. NCV alone does not make you qualified electrician – you still need trade test.

Each level has seven subjects: three fundamental – English, Maths Literacy, Life Orientation – and four vocational. You do practicals and ISAT (Integrated Summative Assessment Task) each year.

How do private colleges compare and how do you spot a fly-by-night?

Private colleges are privately owned and cost more than public TVET. Some are good and accredited. Some are fly-by-night that take fees and give certificate employers ignore.

Check DHET registration and accreditation before paying. Ask for DHET certificate number and check DHET list online. Course must be accredited by QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) or a SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority). If they only issue own certificate with no QCTO or SETA number, be careful.

Colleges in Makhanda and East London can help if you missed TVET dates, but NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) does not fund most private colleges.

Can you get a learnership without matric?

Yes. A learnership is work and study programme registered with a SETA. You work, study and get stipend.

Many SERVICES SETA, W&RSETA (Wholesale and Retail SETA) and CETA (Construction Education and Training Authority) learnerships accept Grade 10 or 11 plus literacy. Examples are retail cashier, cleaning, hospitality and building.

Read advert. If it says NQF Level 2 or ABET Level 4, Grade 10 may be enough.

Find real learnerships on SAYouth.mobi, ESSA and Harambee. It is free and zero-rated. Keep profile updated. Learn the difference between learnership, internship and YES so you know contract type.

How do you apply to a TVET college near you?

Most colleges use online applications.

  1. Pick campus. Lovedale TVET in Alice for Hogsback area, King Hintsa TVET in Butterworth, Eastcape Midlands TVET in Gqeberha.
  2. Gather docs: ID, proof of address, Grade 9-11 report, parent ID if under 18.
  3. Apply on college site or TVET portal. Upload docs and choose course.
  4. Do placement screening for literacy and numeracy.
  5. Apply for NSFAS on nsfas.org.za if you qualify. NSFAS can fund public TVET NCV even without matric. Never pay someone to apply.

If you missed January, ask about NATED trimester or waiting list.

How do you avoid scams that promise a guaranteed job?

No college can guarantee a job. If they say pay and we guarantee placement, it is a scam.

Do not pay for a job. Real employers never ask for money for uniform or training before start. BCEA (Basic Conditions of Employment Act) does not allow selling jobs. Avoid colleges with no DHET registration or SETA accreditation promising jobs. Avoid pressure like pay today or lose spot, or adverts with only WhatsApp and no campus. Avoid certificates with no SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) ID or QCTO number.

Visit campus, see accreditation letters, check DHET register. If unsure, ask at labour centre in Komani or East London.

How do you build a CV when you don’t have matric?

Build strong one-page CV (curriculum vitae) with transferable skills.

  • Header: name, phone, town, languages.
  • Profile: two lines, e.g., “Punctual retail and cleaning experience.”
  • Education: highest grade and short courses.
  • Experience: informal work counts. Shop help in Cathcart, cleaning near Hogsback, volunteering in Makhanda, piece jobs in Mthatha.
  • Skills: cash handling, packing, customer service, hygiene.

Use numbers: “Served 40 customers a day”. Keep plain, one page, PDF. Simple template that beats ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is best.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really get a learnership with only Grade 10 or 11?

Yes. Many SETA learnerships accept Grade 10 or 11 if you read, write and do maths at ABET Level 4. Retail, cleaning and hospitality under SERVICES SETA, W&RSETA and CETA often list NQF Level 1 or 2 minimum. Apply via SAYouth.mobi.

Is NCV Level 4 the same as matric?

NCV Level 4 is NQF Level 4, same level as NSC matric. DHET recognises it for many jobs and further TVET study. Some universities still ask for NSC matric. For trades and hospitality, NCV Level 4 is respected and better than Grade 10 alone.

How much will TVET cost and will NSFAS pay without matric?

Public TVET NCV fees are lower than private colleges. NSFAS can fund NCV even if you entered with Grade 9-11, if you meet citizenship and income rules. Private colleges are not NSFAS funded. Check nsfas.org.za yearly.
