Construction & Trades

Construction and the skilled trades cover everything from residential building and civil works to the maintenance crews that keep factories, hospitals and shopping centres running. Typical vacancies include electricians, plumbers, welders, boilermakers, bricklayers, carpenters, painters, riggers, millwrights and general site labourers. The deciding factor in most of these roles is a recognised trade qualification: a completed apprenticeship with a trade test, often referred to as a red seal, will put you far ahead of candidates who only have site experience. Contractors working on public or large private projects are also graded by the CIDB, so sites routinely ask for specific grading and a valid safety file before a crew is allowed on site. Medical fitness certificates, working-at-height and confined-space tickets are frequently required as well. Work is often project-based, so flexibility about location and contract length widens your options considerably, and artisans who hold their own hand tools and transport are consistently easier to place.
