Where the jobs are in South Africa

South Africa’s job market is not evenly spread. Two provinces — Gauteng and the Western Cape — account for roughly four out of every five listings on JobsJunction, and the gap has widened as corporate head offices, banks and technology companies concentrate in Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and Cape Town. That does not mean the other seven provinces are quiet. Mining, agriculture, manufacturing, public-sector health and education, and a fast-growing call-centre industry all hire steadily outside the metros, usually with far fewer applicants per vacancy.

The counts below are live from our board today. Use them to decide where to concentrate your search: if you can relocate or work remotely, Gauteng and the Western Cape carry the most vacancies by a wide margin. If you are anchored to one region, the smaller provinces still advertise consistently, particularly in mining, health, education and the trades.

Gauteng — 454 live jobs

Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and Midrand form the country’s economic engine. Corporate head offices, banks, insurers, consultancies and a large IT services sector sit here, alongside manufacturing in Ekurhuleni and a dense public-sector presence in Pretoria. Competition is highest, but so is volume — most professional, finance, engineering and tech vacancies on the board are Gauteng-based.

Western Cape — 259 live jobs

Cape Town’s market leans on technology and startups, business process outsourcing and call centres, financial services, tourism and hospitality, and agriculture and wine exports. It has the country’s strongest concentration of remote-friendly tech roles and a large seasonal hospitality intake ahead of the summer tourist season.

KwaZulu-Natal — 92 live jobs

Durban anchors the province through its port and logistics corridor, manufacturing, sugar and chemical industries, and a growing call-centre sector. Tourism along the coast drives hospitality hiring, while Pietermaritzburg adds public-sector, health and education roles.

Eastern Cape — 33 live jobs

Vehicle manufacturing around Gqeberha and East London is the industrial backbone, supported by component suppliers and the automotive sector’s incentive regime. Public-sector health and education, retail and the province’s two ports account for most of the remaining vacancies, particularly in East London and Mthatha.

Mpumalanga — 20 live jobs

Mining and power generation dominate — coal mining, Eskom’s stations, and the engineering and maintenance supply chain around them. Commercial forestry, agriculture and tourism near the Kruger National Park and the Panorama Route add seasonal and hospitality work.

Limpopo — 18 live jobs

Platinum group metals, coal and other mining drive skilled-trades and engineering demand, with agriculture — citrus, macadamia and cattle — and public-sector health and education making up most of the rest. Tourism around the Waterberg and the northern Kruger adds lodge and guiding roles.

Free State — 13 live jobs

Bloemfontein concentrates the province’s public-sector, health, education and legal roles, while agriculture, mining and manufacturing around Welkom, Sasolburg and Bethlehem sustain technical and artisan hiring. Volumes are modest, but competition per vacancy is comparatively light.

North West — 13 live jobs

The platinum belt around Rustenburg and Marikana is the largest employer, with mining, engineering and artisan trades at its core. Agriculture, manufacturing and the Sun City and Pilanesberg tourism cluster contribute further seasonal and hospitality vacancies.

Northern Cape — 9 live jobs

The smallest and most sparsely populated province, but with outsized mining activity — iron ore at Kathu and diamonds along the coast — plus agriculture and a fast-expanding renewable-energy sector around Upington and De Aar. Counts are low, so alerts matter more here than anywhere else.

How to search by province

Choose any province above to see only its listings. If you are open to relocating, start with Gauteng or the Western Cape and then filter by category to narrow the field. If you are tied to one area, set a Telegram or WhatsApp alert for that province instead — on the smaller boards a single new vacancy may be the only one posted that week, and alerts reach you the same day it goes live.

Remote and nationwide roles are tagged separately rather than assigned to a province, so they are not included in the totals above. If you can work from anywhere, check those listings as well.
